High unemployment rates made immigration unpopular.įew Americans wanted to admit Anti-Semitic attitudes. Why did many countries refuse to allow Jews to immigrate? United States immigration laws forbade granting a visa to anyone likely to become a public charge, and customs officials assumed this applied to Jews because Germany forced them to leave behind any wealth. Many of the Jewish refugees were killed in the Nazi's Final Solution when they returned to Europe. They had certificates improperly issued by the Cuban dictator of immigration giving them permission to land on Cuban soil. Jewish refugees entered the harbor of Havana, Cuba, hoping to escape the persecution they were facing in Europe. Many countries limited immigration, any many Jews were turned away. Between 19, thousands of Jews left Germany. Kristallnacht was the staged attacks against the Jews that seemed like a spontaneous popular reaction to the news of the murder of a German diplomat, shot and killed by a young Jewish refugee named Herschel Grynszpan, who sought revenge for the act of Jews being deported and for the general persecution taking place. Kristallnacht "Night of Broken Glass" erupted destroying hundreds of Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues in Austria and Germany. Anti-Semitic violence broke out on November 9, 1938. Nazi laws banned Jews from practicing medicine and from operating businesses, along with the right to work as civil servants, journalists, farmers, and actors. In 1938 half of Germany's Jews were unemployed. These laws denied Jews citizenship and stripped them of many of their basic human rights. Germany and Italy declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941. Roosevelt reduced the amount of oil exported to Japan, so Japan decided to seize the Philippines and attack American fleets on Pearl Harbor. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. ![]() ![]() Japan became a member of the Axis powers when Roosevelt blocked the sale of strategic materials, such as airplane fuel and scrap iron. The United States sent supplies to the Soviet Union after Germany invaded them in 1941. Although neutral, the United States supported Britain by sending destroyers and supplies in exchange for the right to use bases in British territories (Destroyers for Bases Deal indicated change in public opinion) The Lend-Lease Act allowed Britain to receive weapons if they paid for them after the war. President Roosevelt favored internationalism, believing trade would create prosperity and avoid war. Congress passed the Neutrality Act of 1935, reflecting the idea that arms manufacturers brought the United States into World War I.Ī second neutrality act continued the ban on selling arms to warring nations, and required non-military supplies to be bought on a "cash-and-carry" basis. War weary Americans became isolationists they did not want to become involved in international conflicts.
