Type O Negative would go on to release three more albums before the tragic death of Peter Steele. The band followed in 1996 with the album October Rust, which featured classic songs such as “Love You to Death,” “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend,” and a cover of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl.” It was with this album that Type O Negative was able to reinvent itself as a goth metal band. This low baritone style of singing would soon become one of Steele’s new trademarks in music. Peter Steele’s hard-core influenced screaming was no longer to be heard, and was replaced by a smooth baritone vocal. Upon its release, however, fans were in a state of shock. The band released Bloody Kisses in 1993, which would go platinum. The song “Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity” contained such charming passages as “You had cock on your mind and cum on your breath / You inserted that diaphragm before you left… / I know you’re fucking someone else.” These lyrics still displayed the same gritty, nihilistic tone that Peter Steele was known for. While Carnivore’s lyrics consisted of highly controversial subject matter, which ranged from hatred of Catholics to the advocacy of violent sexual assault and everything in between, Type O Negative’s lyrics were almost entirely about romance and relationship troubles. There was a notable difference in the lyrics as well. Fans noticed a more solid use of tempos and slow rhythms in contradiction to Peter Steele’s former band, which was known for its rapid speed and intensity. The album contained seven songs but because of their long durations, it still clocked in at an hour’s length. Many eager fans waited in anticipation for the release of his next band’s debut after Carnivore broke up, and in 1991 the wait finally ended with the release of the album Slow, Deep and Hard. Few could deny front man Peter Steele’s talent as both a songwriter and a musician. The band would go platinum in 1993 and eventually go gold in 1996. Peter Steele, who played bass and was the lead vocalist, formed the band in Brooklyn, New York. Type O Negative was a gothic metal band formed after the dissolution of the hardcore band Carnivore in 1987. Today Adam introduces us to a bloody brilliant Brooklyn band…

Ockham razor example6/2/2023 Where, then did life come from? The usual evolutionist answer is that it arose from some chance combination of atoms and molecules in some primeval soup. The principle of asepsis (sterilization), arising from the work of Pasteur, Lister and others, depends on the fact that once all life has been eliminated, non-life does not and cannot produce life. Another place where this law can be seen at work is in a hospital operating theatre. This is the Law of Biogenesis: Life gives birth to life, but non-life does not. Once all life has been destroyed, new life is not generated. The reason is that cans of food, after sealing, are sterilized by heat to destroy all the bacteria within them. The next time you eat a can of beans or stewed fruit you might like to reflect on why it is that you do not die of food poisoning. the ‘single point’ was a black hole, how come anything expanded? How come this explosive expansion produced all the order in the universe? And so on. If one says that matter/energy is the result of the alleged big bang, where did the energy for the big bang come from? If one says it came from the ‘cosmic egg’, there is unleashed a flood of assumptions, or questions for which evolutionists do not have answers.įor example, where did the energy of the ‘cosmic egg’ come from? What caused it to be compressed into a single dimensionless point (a ‘singularity’, which is another way of saying nothing 7)? What triggered the expansion of nothing? If gravity was near infinite, i.e. Therefore the universe is not eternal it had to have a beginning. If the universe was eternal, heat death would have happened a long, long time ago, but it hasn’t. But the universe is running down in accordance with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and sooner or later will reach heat death-when everything will be at the same temperature, a few degrees above absolute zero. If one says matter/energy is eternal, then as a logical consequence, the universe must be eternal. Where did matter and/or energy come from? We will consider the evolutionists’ dilemma first.ġ. Let us apply Ockham’s Razor to the two theories of origins, namely evolution and creation, and in particular to the respective answers to several fundamental problems which either theory must be able to explain in order to be viable. Application to origins Image William of Ockham However, by invoking Ockham’s Razor, sceptics make a rod for their own backs for, as we shall see, once the validity of Ockham’s Razor is admitted and this criterion is applied to aspects of the creation/evolution debate, the results are clearly on the side of creation and against evolution. It seems better to employ the principle of economy known as Occam’s razor and cut out all the features of the theory that cannot be observed.’ 6 However, such models of the universe are not of much use to us ordinary mortals. The Skeptic’s Dictionary says: ‘atheists often apply Occam’s razor in arguing against the existence of God on the grounds that God is an unnecessary hypothesis.’ 5Īnd in his bestseller, A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking, discussing the uncertainty principle, writes: ‘We could still imagine that there is a set of laws that determines events completely for some supernatural being, who could observe the present state of the universe without disturbing it. Is Ockham’s Razor valid when it comes to discussing the supernatural? Well, atheists seem to think so. Validity to the supernatural Stephen Hawking's book Later Isaac Newton was able to account for the movements of both the earth and the heavenly bodies by just one assumption-the Law of Gravitation. For example, the main advantage of the Copernican Theory (that the earth revolves round the sun) over the Ptolemaic Theory (that the sun moves round the earth) was the reduction in the number of separate assumptions from 79 to 34. When applied to different theories about nature, this does not mean that nature is not complex, but only that, when accounting for any observed phenomenon in nature, the explanation that involves the fewest assumptions is most probably the correct one.Īs well as being good philosophy, this method of reasoning is also sound science. ‘Entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity’. The principle that bears William’s name, in one of its several Latin forms, is: ‘ Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatum’, i.e. 2 A razor-sharp maxim ‘Atheists often apply Ockham’s razor in arguing against the existence of God on the grounds that God is an unnecessary hypothesis.’ ( The Skeptic’s Dictionary) Today Ockham is a village in Surrey, England, about 40 km (25 miles) south-west of London. It was used so frequently and so cuttingly by the English theologian and philosopher, William of Ockham, in the fourteenth century, that it became known as Ockham’s Razor. Ockham’s (or Occam’s) Razor, also known as the Law of Parsimony or the Law of Succinctness, is the name given to a philosophical principle. Pomodoneapp lite plan6/2/2023 I suggest you find the time blocks that work best for you the same way.Īll of our best apps roundups are written by humans who've spent much of their careers using, testing, and writing about software. Cirillo discovered it with trial and error. So, if the formality of the Pomodoro Technique turns you off, don't worry. (I find that if you get into a good flow with things, a break every 25 minutes can feel disruptive.) But even if you don't stick exactly to the Pomodoro Technique's time blocks, the underlying principles are really powerful-and the same timer apps can generally accommodate longer (or shorter) work blocks. But to be totally honest, I rarely use it exactly as instructed. Most people will be able to accomplish two full cycles, but three or four are possible if you have a lot to get done. Keep going until your work or study session is done. Grab lunch, read a book, or go for a quick walk. Somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes is normally right it depends on how you feel. Use the timer to keep yourself honest.Īfter a total of four Pomodoros, take a longer break. Basically, any of the things you're not allowed to do when you're working are now fair game. You can stretch, get coffee, or check social media. Take a 5-minute break to clear your head. When the timer rings, you've done one Pomodoro. (You should really have everything silenced while you work.) Ignore any distractions or notifications from emails, texts, or the like. Get to work, and don't stop until the timer rings. For example, for me, each section of this article is getting assigned one or two 25-minute chunks. Bigger tasks should be split into smaller chunks. Pick a task that will take roughly 25-minutes to accomplish. The basic process is normally described as something like this:ĭecide what you're going to do. Over the past few decades, the technique has become more popular. Since the Italian for tomato is "pomodoro" he called his system the Pomodoro Technique after the original little tomato timer. And it helped-he was instantly more productive, at least when the timer was running.Īfter a bit of tweaking, testing, and refining, Cirillo settled on 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break, repeated four times, as the best balance for him. Cirillo started by setting it for 10 minutes and trying to just work for the 10 minutes until the timer rang. Inspiration came from a small tomato-shaped kitchen timer. He kept getting distracted and losing focus, so he went looking for a way to get back on track. A 25-minute work session is long enough that you can stay engaged and make real progress, without feeling like a grind, while the 5-minute breaks, which never feel far off, give you a chance to freely check Twitter or look at some emails without disrupting your work.įrancesco Cirillo developed the Pomodoro Technique in the 1980s when he was in college in Italy and struggling to study. What makes the Pomodoro Technique so easy to implement is how short the blocks are. I'm using it right now to write this article. As a professional writer, it's the tool I bust out whenever I need to hit a deadline or just get work done without dawdling. While it didn't single-handedly get me through my college degree, it helped me get better grades with less effort. I've used the Pomodoro Technique (or variations on it that we'll look at later) for more than a decade. After that, you take a 15- to 30-minute break, depending on how you feel. You set a timer for 25 minutes, work until it's up, then take a 5-minute break-and repeat the whole process three more times. The Pomodoro Technique sounds basic, but it really works. Toggl Track for combining Pomodoro with time-tracking Marinara Timer for a shareable web-based Pomodoro timer Pomodor for a simple web-based Pomodoro timer So, let's look at the best Pomodoro timers. It saves you the hassle of winding up a manual timer or constantly checking the clock. While any timer (or timer app) will work for the Pomodoro Technique, a dedicated Pomodoro app can make the already simple technique even simpler by automatically alternating between work and break periods. Cut video to gif converter6/2/2023 Choose the video you would like to convert to a GIF.Click “File” in the top left corner and select “Import” and “Video-to-Photo.”.You can follow these steps to master the video-to-photo effect and turn any video into a short, convenient GIF: PhotoDirector’s video-to-photo tool streamlines the GIF creation process. This image editing software comes with a range of professional-level tools and features and enables you to convert videos to GIFs in a few quick and easy steps. You can find a wide range of editing programs that allow for video-to-GIF conversions, but PhotoDirector is undoubtedly your best choice. This option gives you more control over your conversion than a free online editor would, enabling you to produce a high-quality, impressive GIF from your video. However, the easiest and most efficient way to do this is through an editing program. You can use several methods to convert a video into a GIF on your desktop computer. How to Create a GIF From Video on Windows and Mac Loop: GIFs play on a loop, and you cannot pause or rewind these animations. As a result, GIFs look a little jumpier than videos. Low frame rate: GIFs typically have a frame rate between 15 and 24 frames per second (fps), which is slightly lower than that of traditional videos.Because GIFs cannot use the vast selection of colors that traditional videos do, they often appear to be duller and of lower quality. This means that the most colors a GIF can display at one time is 256, or 2 8. Two hundred fifty-six (256) colors: Most GIFs are 8-bit graphics, which means each pixel within the GIF is 8 bits, or 1 byte.As a result, many people add captions to help viewers understand the GIF’s context. No sound: GIF files are completely silent.GIFs include several features that differentiate them from videos and images. Typically, when you hear someone mention a “GIF,” they’re talking about a silent animation in a GIF file format. Graphic interchange format, or GIF, is a type of image file format that supports both animated and static images. Once they've been blacklisted, the fraudsters just create new ones. That's important because phishing sites are ephemeral. We make sure to include some that haven't been analyzed and blacklisted yet. Our phishing protection test uses URLs reported as fraudulent on various phish-tracking sites. Rather than trying to fool the operating system, they aim to fool the user. The moment some poor sap logs in, that account belongs to the fraudsters. Why bother when you can get the user to just hand over the desired information? Phishing websites mimic banks, financial sites, and other sensitive sites, trolling for innocents who will use the fake site to log in. Writing a malware program to steal sensitive information while at the same time evading operating system traps and antivirus defenders is tough. Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus (for Mac) has the best score this test, with 100% of Windows malware eliminated. This test is an exception Avast managed to catch 89% of the Windows malware samples. Avast and AVG turned in identical scores in almost every test, whether on Windows or macOS. AVG immediately started wiping out the samples, quickly eliminating 83% of them. To test AVG's skills against Windows malware, I copied my current malware collection from a thumb drive to the desktop. AVG promises to detect and remove Windows and mobile malware, in addition to malware aimed at macOS. True, malware designed for Windows can't run on a Mac, but eliminating it means there's no chance of it somehow leapfrogging to a Windows system on your network. I suggest that you run a Deep Scan immediately after installing AVG, to root out any hidden nastiesĪlmost all the Mac antivirus utilities I've reviewed include the ability to detect Windows malware as well. Even the Deep Scan only took 17 minutes, just a hair longer than Avast, and well below the current average of 27 minutes. Clicking the gear icon next to Scan Mac lets you choose a Deep Scan of the entire system, or a File Scan looking just at certain files or folders. On the MacBook Air I use for testing, this scan finished in less than five minutes. If you just click the big Scan Mac button, AVG scans the most likely places for malware traces. Clario, MacKeeper, and Norton 360 Deluxe (for Mac) also scored 18 of 18 with AV-Test. Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky also have a perfect score from AV-Comparatives. It’s likely that AVG would have scored the same, but the labs state very clearly that test results apply only to the precise product tested.Īt present, Avira Free Antivirus for Mac is the only macOS antivirus with perfect scores from both labs. Avast’s total score, 17.5 of 18 possible points, merited the designation Top Product. A minor system slowdown brought its Performance score to 5.5. Avast scored the full six points for Protection and Usability. This lab rates products on Protection, Performance, and Usability that last category refers to minimizing false positives. Naturally, both earned this lab's certification.ĪV-Test Institute (Opens in a new window) also included Avast in its latest report, but omitted AVG. Both protected against 100% of all three sample groups: macOS malware, macOS PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications), and Windows malware. We don't perform that level of testing on macOS, so results from the two labs that test Mac antivirus take on much greater importance.Īs mentioned, Avast now owns AVG, so I wasn't surprised to see that the two earned precisely the same scores from AV-Comparatives (Opens in a new window). We use virtual machines, so if malware wreaks havoc, we just revert to an earlier clean snapshot. When reviewing Windows antivirus utilities, we look at test results from four independent labs, and we also perform our own hand-on testing with live malware. You can install McAfee AntiVirus Plus (for Mac) on all the macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS devices in your household. With McAfee, that $59.99 subscription price gets you unlimited licenses, not just three. Half of the current products fit that model, and most of those give you three licenses for $59.99 per year. The most common price point for commercial Mac antivirus is just under $40 per year for a single license. It's Surprisingly Easy to Be More Secure Online
